Dutch Oven Cooking

Many people are accustomed to the modern ease of cooking on an electric stove and oven. The precise temperature makes it easy compared to the dutch ovens. However, the cast iron dutch oven has an enjoyment that still attracts many people. Rather than turning some knobs and pressing some buttons, the campfire is used to make coals, which are put under and on top of the dutch oven. The enjoyable experience of campfire cooking is what attracts people.

The dutch oven is America’s oldest cooking oven. They were used by colonists and pioneers, and were even used by Lewis and Clark. During their expedition, they had to leave things behind to lighten their load, but they kept their cast iron pots. The only manufactured items they returned with were their guns and pots. This would soon become the standard for pioneers, cowboys and other settlers of the west.

They were also used in Revolutionary War camps. The patriot Paul Revere was a blacksmith and silver-smith. It was him that was credited with the lip on the top of the lid of the dutch oven, which he designed to hold the coals on so they won’t fall off.

So whether you enjoy cooking out in your back yard, or if you are an extreme outdoor enthusiast, the cast iron dutch oven is an enjoyable experience to cook with, and eat food from.
